The descriptions of these stories are far too cursory for this piece to be very effective or meaningful. The author made no attempt to tie them together in any way or comment on how, perhaps, religion coverage in 2008 compares to previous years. Not that Time should have to pay lip service to every major religion in the name of balance, but the fact that a story involving Islam doesn't appear on this list makes me question the magazine's news judgment.

Number 10 on this list -- "Extraterrestrials may already be saved" -- is a perfect example of how servile some of our national journals of truth and fact can be in the face of the religious. This cockamamie story shows, once again, that you can say just about anything and be taken seriously as long as people call you Father or Reverend or Sheikh. Imagine if Jose Funes was not a member of the clergy, and had sent a letter to Time's editors, purporting that aliens may "already be saved" and that humans are the "lost sheep" of the cosmos. I'll say no more -- you can complete the analogy on your own.
