Because Religion is The Battleground of the 21st Century

The man with the most military power in the history of the world is reported to have said, "I'm driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, 'George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan.' And I did, and then God would tell me, 'George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq …' And I did."

Beinhart asks the most important--and least acceptable--question of our time: what is it about faith...? Thoughtful inquiry about using religion to motivate--or justify--the most depraved acts we inflict on others.

Tally up the greatest number of senseless acts of torture and war, and an appalling proportion of them are due to 'religion' mixed with politics. Isn't it ironic that we tend to criticize "religious fanatics" when they're from other faiths, yet OUR religious, um, zealots, are "persons of faith," or simply "fundamentalists." And we see their "patriots" as "terrorists," and vice versa. But in reality, a crime is a crime, whether motivated by religion or politics, or pure and simple greed. It is time we dropped the labels and the religious differences, saw each other as human beings, and practiced the universal teaching: the Golden Rule.

What is it about faith that makes world leaders like George Bush and Tony Blair – with armies, bombers, missiles, artillery, and navies – ignore good advise, abandon good sense, and lead their countries to two of the stupidest wars in history? And while they’re at it, to radically change the moral positions that their countries adopted just sixty years ago and commit what were then called war crimes: initiating a war of aggression, torture, and the failure to provide for the populations of the countries they occupied?

So the fundamental national security questions of our time have to be about faith. What is it about faith that makes people eager to commit suicide so long as it enables them to commit mass murder while they’re at it?
