A new US military report has come under scrutiny for asserting that the scientific data on what is causing global warming is "contradictory" - a position one leading specialist said indicates the government still hasn't fully embraced the urgency of climate change. Full Story »

A he-said-she-said report that quotes some good sources, but doesn't go into any 'whys'.

This story is thought provoking as the military seems to be walking a tightrope. The author offers quotes from science, military and industry leaders providing different perspectives on the matter of climate change. It would have been helpful if the reporter had been able to get a quote from someone in military command who doesn't embrace the concept that global warming is occurring (as stated in the final paragraph). The rest of the story seems to say that the military does embrace that it's happening, but isn't convinced it is caused by man. In the quotes section below I've added the three comments currently available from readers of The Boston Globe in the "quotes" section for consideration. I find it interesting that ... More »

I found the article a bit strange and confusing. But then the military’s report is a bit strange and confusing. For example, consider the military’s statement about global warming: “What is causing it is not in our purview. The commanders have to deal with effects.” If the military doesn’t give a damn about global warming’s causes, then why the big deal about the causes being contradictory?

Obviously military leaders aren’t going out on a limb disagreeing with their commander in chief, who along with buddy Karl Rove, is busy rewriting history. So we now can add “contradictory” to the “greatest fraud ever perpetrated on mankind” and “pseudo science” arguments against global warming. How much more of the ice cap has to melt; how big does the newly open Northwest Passage have to get; or how many polar animals have to go extinct before neocons acknowledge ... More »

A bit of a mish-mash. Yes, the scientific data IS contradictory; any statement to that effect is hardly an "assertion." This article does spotlight several assertions, however--that of Kerry Emanuel, for example, who claims, "The jury is not out on what is causing global warming." This article is useful in that it illustrates the fact that cracks do indeed exist in the veneer of scientific consensus that suggests human-generated greenhouse gases are causing global warming.

Some global warming HAS occurred during recent decades, though the warming has plateaued--or even decreased--during the past several years. The question becomes: "Why, if greenhouse gas emissions (including carbon dioxide) are still increasing, does the satellite data indicate a plateauing or even a reversal of global warming?" Of course even asking such a question is "worrisome" to those who would have us charge ahead with changes that would cause rapid de-industrialization and ... More »

Are the claims of the military true? No one seems to have asked that question or why the military made the claim in the first place. In fact, a lot of scientists, and I am one of them, know that the climate models are vey primitive. All in all, worth reading just to see how confused some people are, and how misguided others are, and finally, how simple minded others are.

A factual report on what some in the military are thinking.

Hey America! Forget about global warming, Its serious effects may be a couple of decades away. Look at the more immediate problem. All the money your are sending overseas for energy is coming back to buy up your country. How much of America is still owned by Americans. Do the necessary research on solar elecric panels until they sell for $1.00US per watt and get Detroit making electric cars. You have never had more leverage with GM, Ford and Christler than at present. Do ... More »

Mr Bender does a good job of showing the attitude the military has of global warming.

Pondered piece, well illustrated with statements from both sides of the military report -- scientists coming up with data and policy makers coming up -- more or less -- with conclusions and solutions.

The military representatives apparently try to keep objectivity, neutrality towards the cause of global warming and emphasis on practical solutions, while scientists and environment people are worried that the military position in the matter is in fact noncommittal, which will translate into future ineffective measures.

A nice story trying to repair the damage from someone daring to tell the truth. Keeping a lie going is hard - the report mentioned is precisely correct - the evidence for global warming is contradictory. I heard Kerry Emannuel on a panel with 3 other hurricane experts. He was the only one who said maybe global warming will make hurricanes stronger.

Telling the truth about global warming science is very dangerous. Anyone who has a job who does is in trouble for spreading "bizarre" ideas and "being out of line."
