This story presents a well-thought view of the role of education and the problems of much of education. While it could have provided more about the need for a more thoughtful and critical educational method for the youngest of our students, it provides a compelling analysis of the system.

As a member of a board of education, I have been concerned about the lack of problem-solving skills and the emphasis on practice tests in our schools. This does not provide our students with the skills necessary to do any important job well.

The interview is moderately long, but is an erudite tour of the nature of education and current problems in education. It is well worth reading.

Our education systems have gone too far down the road of becoming trade schools teaching orthodoxy, while ignoring critical thought and the needs of people and democracy.
