What's Obama gonna give me?

Posted by Derek HawkinsSo befuddled it can almost be dismissed entirely, perhaps if Beck didn't have such a large and loyal audience. Unattributed sources, rumor, a strange reading from Sam Adams, using uncontextualized remarks to make a sweeping case against Obama -- this is not journalism.
Rambling and biased story about rumors of free stimulus money allegedly handed out by the Obama administration. As primary evidence for this serious allegation, this 4 min. video segment features a short audio interview with an unidentified black woman who laughingly says she received 'free money' from Obama (excerpted out of context from WJR Radio Detroit ). No other factual evidence or credible source is provided to support the author's claims. He goes on to quote Samuel Adams ("It is in the interest of tyrants to reduce people to ignorance and vice") to suggest that Obama is trying to "keep you dumb" - then veers off track on an unrelated rant about the administration's support of medical marijuana. This unfair, inaccurate, ... More »
A textbook example of bad journalism. Compare this short clip from Glenn Beck to other cable news shows under review on NewsTrust: http://bit.ly/35uc7w
This "gotcha" journalism is right out of the Mike Wallace playbook, with a right wing slant. Beck can't even read the cue correctly. This is in no way journalism. He's a paid, and paid very well, to spout the conservative agenda.
There was no organized narrative thread to the report. I was confused by a series of images, audio clips, and historical quotations linked together without any grounding in a larger context. It doesn't seem like a news report, as it's not reporting any news. It was a list of complaints about a variety of non-connected media items, and in the end, it didn't make much sense. This is an opinion piece, but not very well expressed. The reporter's sarchasm and anger underpins everything he says.
I've never watched Glenn Beck's show before. It was interesting to see it and reflect on what people say about it. (I thought there would be more news value, but there wasn't any.)
Glenn Beck appeals to the same level of informed audience in the video. This is very bad journalism. He is one of the tyrants that Samuel Adams wrote about.
Beck's rant is so full of distortions it's hard to know where to begin. He begins by using snippets of interviews with uneducated people, all of whom are black, which underlines his thinly disguised racism. He quotes Sam Adams, who's talking about why the country needs to separate itself from being oppressed by another nation, not from its own government, Beck bathes in patriotism, although his version of it is to accuse freely elected leaders of launching an assault on those who elected them . He throws in medical marijuana as an example of immorality and vice. HIs appeal is to those who think their country is being taken away from them by those who don't look, talk or think like them. In fact, it isn't journalism at all. It's ... More »
A particularly disjointed clip from Glen Beck's Tuesday, October 20, 2009 show. Beck attempts to ride Samuel Adams' coattails, to ill effect. That a considerable portion of Obama's support derives from the uninformed is beyond dispute--yet the same can be said of the support George W. Bush enjoyed. This clip adds almost nothing of value, and I can see nothing to support Beck's assertion that "Obama wants to keep us dumb."
With long exposure I have become fairly inured to the faults of those who reside on the fringes, whether Left or Right. In fact this week I have set myself the rather onerous task of watching Glenn Beck daily. I think his Monday, October 19, 2009 show offered much more that was of value, and his Wednesday, October 21 show made a few good points. With Beck one must sit through a lot of repetitive, spoon-fed verbiage--some of it as disjointed as this clip, some borderline inspired. ... More »
I recommend this "story" purely for its humor value. The glowing quote from S. Adams didn't have a single word in it about outlawing slavery, so it's a hoot. As far as getting some ignorant people to say ignorant things... I dunno if I can legitimately get down on Beck for doing that, since I've gotten and published awfully stupid on-camera statements from his tea bag followers, too. Whatever.
Actually i've never listened to glen beck before. i like this piece - it is not news - more like a color piece you'd see on Leno - stupid things people say and think. The adams piece at the end goes on too long and loses impact.
