The article seems constrained to the mindset of unfettered trade for large trading corporations. To buy imported goods, the residents of the country must have jobs and income. There is a regulatory framework needed. Playing fair should not necessitate impoverishing your working population.

Katrinka Barysch is one of the most brilliant minds on the EU and its Global impact. Very well written, thoughtful details and visionary in outlook. The article looks at all the angles, read it twice.

The article points out the reactions of various countries to shifting economics and the politics of Tibet as well as looking at the part emerging nations play. Katrinka also illustrates clearly that while China is emerging as a financial power, their insecurity and old fears, political ghosts etc. are still with them. When China grows up and truly opens their economy and accepts the rules, they'll gain broad trust and repect.
