One Man’s Military-Industrial-Media Complex

Many retired officers hold a perch in the world of military contracting, but General McCaffrey is among a select few who also command platforms in the news media and as government advisers on military matters. These overlapping roles offer them an array of opportunities to advance policy goals as well as business objectives. But with their business ties left undisclosed, it can be difficult for policy makers and the public to fully understand their interests. Full Story »

This continues the work done by this reporter in an April expose, "Behind TV Analysts, Pentagon's Hidden Hand" (link) which resulted in Congressional demands that the DoD stop its propaganda program (see link) . Barstow answered questions about how he came to write that article in the business pages of the Times after the paper received over 1,400 comments. (link) As I noted in my evaluation, this article is not as enterprising as it would appear. What disturbs me is that Barstow, like other reporters at the NYT often pretend to a scoop that builds on uncredited info from previous articles in supposedly "lesser" sources. For instance, in "Disclosures on Palin Raise Questions on Vetting Process," Elisabeth Bumiller, on ... More »

The corporate ownership of news media is rife with potential conflicts of interest, which in turn, affects the quality of our democracy. NBC News, of course, is owned by GE, which has been awarded $8,761,071,362 in defense contracts during the period 2000 to 2007, according to informatioin pulled from ublic records by Governmentcontracts.com. (see link) This, despite, GE being fined for fraud in such contracts during the previous decade, according to the corporate entry at ... More »

An extraordinarily well-reported story on a vitally important topic. The real sin isn't that McCaffrey is serving his corporate masters; it's that NBC News doesn't seem to care that McCaffrey is pulling his punches because of his various conflicts of interest.

The rather long article presents a wealth of information on the purity of General McCaffrey, the pure corruption. The corruption of NBC news shown here suggests it is a news source that should not be trusted due to the powers on the top failing to investigate and stop this conspiracy of corruption. Their seems to be a lot of investigative journalism at play here, though Beth, in her thorough review, notes perhaps a failure to credit the sources for much of the information.

General McCaffrey, General Electric, and General Bullmoose seem to share the motto "Don't do anything crooked unless it's legal." It is time to make some of this illegal. Require corporations with military contracts to divest themselves from news organizations. Require ex military and government employees to publicly disclose all corporate compensation agreements as a prior condition to any special government briefings or access. Reduce military retirement pay by amounts equal ... More »

this story illustrates clearly by using one person's detailed profile, how financial, personal, political and social interests are completely inseparable in much of what goes on in our government al politics and media. to say of gen. mccaffrey as quoted at the article's end, ''his motives are pure... national interest" sounds similar to other former employees who then lobby their previous gov't agency for the business which pays them.

A great many named sources, including General McCaffrey, lead me to believe the content and to be disappointed in General McCaffrey and all those who did not find it 'necessary' to reveal his conflicts of interest.

Painstaking report on one retired general's propensity to get his snout in the trough, in the classic mode of military-industrial complex that controls this country.

The truly idiotic level of "defense" spending by the US owes a great deal to greedy snout-in-the-trough retired generals, admirals etc.
