Beware the church of climate alarm

One of Australia's leading enviro-sceptics, the geologist and University of Adelaide professor Ian Plimer, 62, ...debunked climate-change myths. "Climates always change," he said. Our climate has changed in cycles over millions of years, as the orbit of the planet wobbles and our distance from the sun changes, for instance, or as the sun itself produces variable amounts of radiation...His two-hour presentation included more than 50 charts and graphs, as ... No. This article lacks the depth to be classified as a "special report" and balance to be included as news, as revealed by the use of terms such as "climate alarmists" and "enviro-skeptics" (which the other side calls "climate change deniers." Such labeling shows the same kind of s bias as the use of "pro-choice" and "pro-life" do for the debate about abortion. I'd submit, that despite Walter's opinion and the appearance of debate in this article, I'm not sure of whether the science is truly that up in the air. And this piece doesn't further my knowledge of the same. This piece is an uncritical rundown of a speech by Ian Plimer, an associate of The Institute of Public Affairs, which The Autralian described in "Dispute ... More »

As someone who has seen the coal industry's efforts to promote the blowing up of mountains in the name of "energy security" I admit to having a dog in this fight because the possibility that C02 contributes to climate change has finally attracted some attention to our plight from groups outside Appalachia. And, just as the Federalist Society tries to influence the ideological cant of law schools, my experience has been that industries seeking freedom from oversight and ... More »

The title as originally submitted "The Scientific Case for Global Warming Skepticism" clearly suggests that a case for skepticism about global warming will be made in the print below. Apparently SMH decided to change the title during the day as the title is now "Beware the church of climate alarm" perhaps realizing the article made no scientific case for skepticism on the topic at hand. The story provides opinions with sketchy (at best) references toward graphs, experts and a growing public skepticism (although it is unclear if that skepticism is fueled by "facts" or a fear that our world's financial crisis poses a more immediate, and tangible, threat and therefore climate change in the minds of skeptics must be moved to the ... "Climate Alarmists" is a code word I've not personally encountered before, but having encountered "pro-abortion" as a descriptive of those who support a woman's right to choose and "anti-marriage" for those who support the rights of glbt people to marry (need I go on?). As a religious skeptic, I can point to a myriad of well constructed arguments that would make it clear what skepticism is. The apparent attempt to co-opt the label skepticism (even adopting a church reference in ... More »

This article exposes the weak connection between actual scientific evidence and the prevailing dogma that human activity is responsible for global warming . Alternate hypotheses are clearly presented , and the reader is left with a healthy desire to explore Professor Ian Pilmer's views in more detail. With the current global financial crisis in full swing, this topic becomes increasingly relevant, since enormous taxes related to global warming hysteria are likely to affect economic activity in negative ways.

As the years have passed, it has become apparent to me that there is not sufficient evidence to support the hypothesis that human activity is causing global warming. In fact much of the recent satellite date suggests otherwise, since a cooling trend has been evident in the scientific data for some years now, even though CO2 emissions have increased. It is all to the good to encourage conservation and move in the direction of sustainable energy, however those imperatives should not ... More »

Total BS, standing reason on its head with discredited claims. It repeats the strange tactic of demonizing science as a religion, as though any differing from the author's delusions is a matter of false faith. This is disgraceful pandering to ignorance and fear.

Arguments that the earth is flat do not deserve equal status with arguments that the earth is pretty close to a sphere. Questions of science need to be answered by people schooled in scientific methods, not by name-calling in a saloon.
