This is a very good story because it explains the structures that can lead to discriminatory behavior. For a group of students who have been racially isolated/segregated, their response makes sense. Though I'm not condoning it. This story explains group/personal behaviors, but it also talks about the structures that can exacerbate discrimination on several levels. My only criticism is that it would have been nice to see the juxtaposition of the lives of black students and Vietnamese students. We get the background of immigrant students, but what about those who have lived in the area for so long and have been neglected for decades. What are their parents' stories? How do their stories align with those of immigrant students?

This article continues to help verify that the whole human race has the potential to be racist and any given society should develop a strong sense of understanding this horrific endeavor and should be acting and not reacting to resolve this problem. This incident in Philadelphia is truly a sad commentary on behalf of the black community. Because of racism and suffering that blacks have faced in this nation, the black community should have a strong sense of empathy for the suffering ... More »

Every one involved says it's not racial but Washington has violence so connected to racism he can't hear it even as he writes it down.

According to this article in a South Philly high school you have two sets of students. The expectation for one is "graduation rate was 48 percent. Only 16 percent of students were proficient or better in reading and 8 percent in math"for the other its "If I study hard I will get a lot of opportunities, scholarships, grants...," he says. "It's rewarding to work hard and study hard." The school will come up with some BS excuse why its somebody else's fault, they'll confront bulling, ... More »

a) The many complexities of this issue were explained very well in this article. The reasons for the attacks, other then just race, like the isolation for the different groups were explained with clarity. b) Race in association with violence at schools is still a big issue that is dealt with at many schools today. This article helped me understand that. I was unaware that this was still an issue before reading this article. So in terms of depth of understanding a lot of what I know about this issue comes from this article, which did a very good job with providing me with knowledge of this issue. c) This article did a very good job of clarifying the issue for me. Because I never had to deal with race or violence at any school ... More »

This story gives great detail on how the issue of racism still exists in places as common as a high school. These teens who knew nothing about each other’s backgrounds felt separated by something as simple as skin color. Although this article lacks essentials from the accused attackers’ conditions of life, we can get a small understanding that these attackers felt like they were not given the attention they needed from school officials. And without more understanding from both ... More »
