Voter Registration Should Be Automatic

The problems arose because our old system of state-by-state registration rules — some of which appear designed for a mail system via pony express — is outmoded and frankly retains vestiges of our racist past. This is pretty good, given the limited space allotted to opinion articles. Adding just a few words of detail to the evidence would have helped. It gives most of the known pro-universal registration arguments, but completely omits the cons. As a result this won't convince everyone, but will get people thinking.

I am a Registrar of Voters, and agree that universal registration would be good. But the real argument is the privacy issue. Universal registration in other countries requires either a universal ID card, or the government must always know every citizen's current address. In the U.S., neither of these ideas is tolerated.
