Stephen Hawking may very well understand why God did not create the universe, but if he does, he did not convey that knowledge in this very brief artcle. He spent most of the article explaining why people throughout history have thought that there was some intelligent designer who created the universe, but then simply asserts that a designer is not necessary because "the laws of gravity and quantum theory allow for universes to appear spontaneously from nothing." Oh, and apparently a multitude of other universes without the properties that are needed for human existence would be needed, too. After spending so much of the article setting us up for the punchline, I was expecting the punchline to, well, have more punch. Doesn't whether or not a God created the universe deserve a bit more than a one-line refutation?
