This is a very strange human-interest story. The reporter has a great subject, a self-taught photographer who has become the Ansel Adams of the National Christmas Tree. Yet there are no questions about photography, how he grew as a photographer, improving composition, lighting techniques (night shots are challenging, etc. You don't have to work for Petersen's Photographic to get a few questions. Dwyer focuses almost entirely on the tree; and not the artistic human being who had the vision to do the project. Nor is the editor any better. One of the best parts of the story was how the artist took this around to nursing homes; yet no picture of him showing it in the nursing home! This piece was an "evergreen," not a breaking deadline story. Shallow. The artist deserved better. You also wonder what the paid Public Affairs guys were doing with the tree lightings. A big event, and they don't take photos?
