Outstanding story spelling out reasons Bob Gates is not a good choice to stay on at Defense. Gates helped to inflate, vastly, the CIA estimates of the threat posed by the Soviet Union, to justify the gargantuan arms spending by the Reagan administration at a time it was obvious the USSR was at the point of collapse. Gates was an effective salesman for the "surge" in Iraq which may well have been a significant mistake rather than a success.

Gates is the servant of the military-industrial complex. Preposterous armaments programs based on rivalry with a hostile major power armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons continue even though most of the enemies are either on foot, on the backs of various animals, or in jeeps. This is obviously insane.
