Obama Team Tilts Toward Gates

Beyond keeping Gates, Obama appears headed toward staffing much of his foreign policy team with people tied to the Clinton administration, including many who were strong supporters of the Iraq War, most notably Sen. Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. [See Jeremy Scahill’s “This Is Change?”]

That trend has raised concerns among Obama supporters who had hoped Obama meant what he said when he declared during the campaign that “I don’t ... Full Story »

The disingenuous history of Mr. Gates is documented, with additional links provided. Leopold identifies the good old boy network around Obama who seem to be advocating for Gates. Leopold also notes Obama's campaign rhetoric which wanted to change the very pro-war mindset that Gates represents.

Anybody except Gates (or Rumsfeld). How about vetting the following better candidates: Chuck Spinney, Max Cleland, James Webb, Sarah Sewall, Gary Hart, Wesley Clark, Tony Taguba, Richard Danzig, Chuck Hagel, Jack Reed, William Fallon, Michèle A. Flournoy, John P. White, or others that are not lying toadies. Even Powell. There are many options.

Outstanding story spelling out reasons Bob Gates is not a good choice to stay on at Defense. Gates helped to inflate, vastly, the CIA estimates of the threat posed by the Soviet Union, to justify the gargantuan arms spending by the Reagan administration at a time it was obvious the USSR was at the point of collapse. Gates was an effective salesman for the "surge" in Iraq which may well have been a significant mistake rather than a success.

Gates is the servant of the military-industrial complex. Preposterous armaments programs based on rivalry with a hostile major power armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons continue even though most of the enemies are either on foot, on the backs of various animals, or in jeeps. This is obviously insane.

it's informative of the early years that Gates thinks the world has forgotten, but it's informative and gives details that Gates thinks people have forgot or glazed over. Lets hope the confirmation brings it up.

Gates has more baggage than Elizabeth Taylor. What is Obama thinking bringing aboard a man who knows where more skeleton's are buried than his buddy Rumfield.
