The premise that living without a car is good for the environment may be a fallicy. This is more of an emotion piece than an opinion that helps to inform and guide. Lam doesn't really lay out any recommendations for an alternative, other than giving up driving entirely, which is not feasible for most Americans (he lives in San Francisco, a relatively easy place to live without a car.

I live without a car, and find it pretty liberating.
