It is a little more relaxed than a formal article, and that's why I call it a comment. It is a very capable retort to the big guys who are utterly guilty as charged in the comment. The best part is the reiteration of Valdes-Rodriguez's original thesis, that pop culture is the most effective precursor of real cultural change, not the news media. Her thesis is backed up by social science, and the exceptions which prove the rule are the Latino and Asian communities in America. Sydney Portier, Sammy Davis Jr, and many other African Americans in entertainment roles made the acceptance of Obama as President possible. Carlos Mencia is working to do the same for Latinos. I guess I would have to say that "South Park" is trying to do it all.

I saw "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" when I was just a kid, and I am perfectly willing to believe that my attitudes about race were influenced by that movie.
