The Transformation

In the end, she believes they ended up voting out of a different kind of fear — fear for their own economic survival. Self-interest trumped racism. “They had to ask themselves if they wanted a really smart young black guy, or a stodgy old white guy from the same crowd who put us in this hole,” she said. Beautifully written piece. Such insight from Mr. Sokolove, who grew up in Levittown, PA. The tone of the article is non-judgmental; the reporter powerfully lets his subjects speak and thus, has gotten to the heart of the matter. An interesting mix of revealing anecdotes which comes across as trustworthy as sourced statistics would.

This country has gone through a transformation, indeed! :)

There's been a lot of talk about "low-information voters" this year. I wonder if he indicates that pundits underestimated just how much information voters really had.

Very patronizing toward the people mentioned. Instead of implying that Obama overcame racism with his glittering personality, an alternative explanation is that the people just aren't racist.

Obama got very lucky with the economic crash and having a very weak opponent. Basically these people don't embrace liberal politics.
