Kristof mixes good and bad journalism here. While he recognizes some problems he fingers the wrong culprits and boosts bad solutions.

Good teachers will not stay in the profession if they do not have unions to assure them respect and protection from burnout and poor pay. Charter schools have received recent attention for destroying neighborhoods. Their autocratic top down design also destroys democratic school boards.
