The explanation of the problem is poor, and in fact does not make sense. It doesn't even identify the voting machine model. There are claims from a number of viewpoints, but the story doesn't clear up the confusion. Instead it leaves me with more questions. A small error: it would be the third change of systems, not the "fourth change".

I am an election official who works with the same machines mentioned in this story. They truly do not have many alternatives.

The story reports on the controversy and the statements from various sides, but does not manage to clearly sort out the causes of the problems, though I think I understand. It is an important subject.

The vote counting process needs to be returned to the people. If machine counting is done, the machines and software code need to be open and public and inspected. At least in this case the messup was big enough to be noticed immediately. Late results are a minor problem.
