There's something very weird about this story. It's very celebrated and iconic-feeling, like this guy is a hero of some sort. He says some weird things, equating the "gay community" and "African Americans" in his political ambitions. They have the writer of "Milk" say something about him. It's bizarre.

He may be "the most powerful Republican in history to identify as gay," but it sure took him long enough, while his party strove to deny gay people their civil rights.

Marc Ambinder did a great job of taking Mehlman's story and giving in perspective in all time frames; past, present, and future. This story will have huge ramifications for both the gay movements and for the republican party and by extension a retro effect on the Bush legacy - to touch on all of this is indeed good journalism. Missing is any speculation of back lash.

Political history exposed is always of great interest. To see some egg tossed at the Republicans' and the Bush administration is indeed sweet. Not only has Ken Mehlman come out but he has come out all the way and offering to help the gay community and its causes in every way; I truly like the line he is opening his Rolodex - this is an enormous aid to many a gay issue at a time in history where many a subject is open to things going in all kinds of directions.
