Andrew Sullivan likes to bring together the personal and political in his blogging, often to a fault. It works remarkably well in this piece on the approval of California's same sex marriage ban. His insights are sober, articulate and from the heart. A recommended read for everyone.

What a blemish on such a crucial day. This was devastating for me, especially being a new resident of California.

This is a well written and heartfelt lament concerning the passage of a measure eliminating gay marraige in California. Yet it is also a realistic look at the stagger toward achieving civil rights and, in that context, the writer's view that the right to gay marriage will eventually be recognized.

For many of us the joy of an Obama victory is clouded by Proposition 8 in California and Amendment 2 in Florida. Sullivan expresses our despair and celebration well in this piece.

I am in complete agreement with the author. This abbrogation of personal liberties is as sad as Obama's victory is joyous. (I am a straight male.)
