Record number of voters expected to deluge polls

What is uncommon about Tuesday's contest is the sheer number of voters expected to descend on more than 7,000 election jurisdictions across the country. Voter registration numbers are up 7.3 percent from the last presidential election.

Informative overview on the surge of activity at polling places on election day, as a result of the increase in new voters. The author reports long lines and malfunctions from a variety of locations nationwide, including quotes from poll workers and voters (though it's not clear how she collected that information -- presumably by phone, or from other AP reports?).

I was surprised to read that "voter registration numbers are up 7.3 percent from the last presidential election." I had expected that number to be higher, based on what I read in recent days.
