Barack Obama holds a significant lead over John McCain in the final days of Campaign 2008. The Pew Research Center's final pre-election poll of 2,587 likely voters, conducted Oct. 29-Nov. 1, finds 49% supporting or leaning to Obama, compared with 42% for McCain; minor party candidates draw 2%, and 7% are undecided.

This piece is numerically dense, with abundant statistics and comparisons. For those willing to read and digest the information, it provides an excellent crash-course on polls and ways of analyzing them.

Even this level of analysis and exploration of variables can't guarantee the outcome. At many levels, I appreciate the abundance of information, and marvel at the remaining lack of certainty. The better our measurement technologies get, the harder it is to wait until the process is completed.
