Paul Krugman makes the frightening prediction that Republican base may recoil into a reactionary and intolerant minority in the event of John McCain's loss. He offers well reasoned insights into the future of the GOP and its loyalists, mostly based on the gamut of election coverage from white, small town America. He sheds light on the hysterics of recent McCain-Palin rallies, but does so in a less overtly partisan way than other liberal columnists and bloggers I've seen.

Krugman's piece immediately reminded me of a story from Reason Magazine we reviewed early last month that compared social ills in urban and rural America. Check the link.
