As usual, comedy makes a bigger impact on how voters view campaign claims than "serious" news. So I've linked the Colbert clip Hayes references. But Hayes' argument is apt. One thing he doesn't mention is whether or not this tactic actually works. Since conservatives first raised the red menace, we've had many years to judge just how menacing it really is. While some communist strongmen actually do seem to be a threat, socialist programs don't seem to be. Plus, people who remember that Hitler was a supposed socialist are dying off.
