Not quite a breaking story, but close. Author Evans-Pritchard reports on the latest developments regarding the impact of new technology on the world energy crisis--specifically enhanced extraction of methane gas from shale and methane beds. The author makes it clear that this new development will likely have far-reaching economic and political ramifications, especially in Russia since that nation has become dependent on high oil prices to fund its recent resurgence. This article also touches on the positive and negative environmental impact of this new technology with respect to carbon emissions, water use, and pollution of ground water resources. Definitely worth reading.
