Sarah Palin's War on Science

With Palin, however, the contempt for science may be something a little more sinister than the bluff, empty-headed plain-man's philistinism of McCain. We never get a chance to ask her in detail about these things, but she is known to favor the teaching of creationism in schools (smuggling this crazy idea through customs in the innocent disguise of "teaching the argument," as if there was an argument), and so it is at least probable that she believes all ... Christopher Hitchens is in top form in this concise, razor-sharp opinion, which lambastes what he argues is the GOP ticket's religious dogma and contempt for science. As always, he is strong, eloquent, witty and civil. His examples are well chosen. Very compelling, highly recommended.

Go Hitch! This pattern of anti-intellectualism is dangerous! Why is this aversion to science so associated with conservatism? This frightens and frustrates me endlessly.

Hitchen's uses great evidence to further his argument that Sarah Palin has "contempt for knowledge and learning."

Hitchens speaks with courage and verbal alacrity on an important topic that big media tends to shy away from. It is an important issue of character and knowledge, especially after we have seen the anti-scientific devastation of reason under the Bush/Cheney regime. Reality based is a good thing in government.

Hitchens channels my views quite well.

A fair sketch on Sarah. Could have gone on for pages if space allowed.

Another good example of her grasp of science is her attitude on wolves and the ungulates they prey on. If she needs the story in an easily absorbed form, she could read Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat. She could also ask her husband. His ancestors have understood the relationship between predator and prey for thousands of years.

This opinion piece has no journalistic merit. It is a pure hate piece against the Republican candidates. The author is known for his venomous anti-religious bigotry, which explains the latter paragraphs of the piece. He does not even know that the Palins left the Pentacostal church six years ago! Bush has an outstanding record on science policy making, second only to Truman. And in fact there are numerous wasteful "science" pork projects funded every year by Congress, as McCain correctly points out.
