Thought provoking. Douthat does cover his bases pretty well. But I'm not convinced by his argument. Strategically, one has to think about how this plays domestically. And I think conservatives would have been all over him had he not accepted. They would have questioned him as America hating. This was a little bit of a no win of Obama, and all things being equal I think he kept it real (rather than falsely modest).
