Posted by Kaizar CampwalaWell sourced news report on a purported U.S. military raid on the Syrian border. I see a contradiction though: In the first section, Al Jazeera reports that the U.S. military in Iraq didn't have information about the incident, which killed eight people. Then, at the end of the story, it quotes a lieutenant in Iraq who said U.S. forces were not involved in the raid. Not completely contradictory, but seems suspect to me. This could have been better explained.
Its very hard to take anything written by Aljazeera with more than a grain of truth. The article contained no verified information other than an attack took place and people died.
Syria has a long and consistant history in supporting, aiding and abeiting terrorists within it's own borders to avoid being attacked themselves. My suspicion is, Syria rejected "back channel" efforts to handle the problem and an assault was the last option.
A cross-border raid into Syria seems to have killed some non-combatants. Syria protested the violation of its airspace, etc.
If General Odierno authorized this raid, it reveals a serious lack of due concern for Arab opinion. Nothing could be gained in such a gross violation of Syrian rights, as to justify the attack. Meanwhile, the Bush administration stupidly refuses to send the US ambassador to Syria, back to Damascus.
