Excellent article about the failure of General Motors management to anticipate the rise of oil prices, which has brought the giant automaker to the brink of bankruptcy, and caused it to lay off over 40,000 employees over three years. The report documents in great detail how GM brass came to depend on the sale of their gas-guzzling S.U.V.s to shore up their sagging bottom line, and miscalculated the need to invest billions of dollars to develop new vehicles requiring less gas. The authors provide extensive factual information from multiple sources, with insightful context to help us make sense of this tragedy. Highly recommended.

I feel sorry for all the american workers who are paying the price for serious errors in judgment by their executives. One more example of why informed leadership matters, and why humility and the willingness to listen are such important qualities in a manager. Many of the company's strategic errors could have been prevented by more responsive and less short-sighted leaders.
