Voters Sue Pennsylvania, Election Official Scoffs

Earlier this week, ANP reported that, come November, Pennsylvania voters could face substantial delays at the polls. We spoke with the man running the election in Philadelphia, who scoffed at long lines and tales of lost votes. Now, voters are suing the state of Pennsylvania. Here's an update and more of our interview with Philly's deputy commissioner, Fred Voigt. Full Story »

Well presented and interesting video. Definitely leans toward the groups filing the lawsuit. I question why they used just one election official for this story and didn't seek input from others.

The election commissioner is such a nut! "Out of luck"? "People will get disenfranchised"? He says these things so matter of fact and with such a straight face. Infuriating to watch.

Interesting video report about official reactions to a lawsuit brought by voters against the state of Pennsylvania for long delays allegedly caused by equipment malfunctions in Philadelphia. I'm a bit concerned by the lack of independent sourcing about this controversial issue, which pits activists against public officials -- and ANP's indirect involvement in this story. And a transcript would have been a welcome addition, particularly given the lengthy onscreen text quotes. But overall, the report seems grounded on factual information about an important topic.

Gives space for both sides in this Pennsylvania voting debate to lay out their claims. Also includes some, but not enough facts about the issue. Enough context that I could understand the broad outlines of the debate without having read/seen anything else about it.

The videos document charges and concerns that there will be serious problems in voting in Pennsylvania, and that some election officials sound quite cavalier about disenfranchisement.

The fact that Republican McCain is spending money in Pennsylvania even though the polls show him way behind suggests the possibility that disenfranchisement and voting machine fraud and counting machine fraud may be planned. The late campaigning would provide a faux reason why McCain votes were higher than expected.

To be fair I would like to see more of the interview, including how the questions were asked.

This problem is caused primarily by Pennsylvania's decision to use touchscreen DRE voting machines. When paper ballots are used with optical scanners, many voters can vote at once because simple booths are cheap and there are plenty of them. When the number of simultaneous voters is determine by the number of $5000 machines they have, there will never be enough of them. Optical scan wait times are just a few minutes, rarely longer.

This Philadelphia Deputy City Commissioner Fred Voigt is without a doubt the biggest jerk I have ever seen in a position of power. He needs to be fired. How can he so callously agree to leave people standing in line all day, only to be kept from voting if closing time arrives? In the State of AZ, if you are in line when the polls close, you MUST get a chance to vote. This man is purposely trying to discourage people from voting. SOMEOINE NEEDS TO TELL US WHAT WE CAN DO to get rid of this man before 11/4/08!
