ACORN Accusations

McCain makes exaggerated claims of "voter fraud." Obama soft-pedals his connections.

The McCain-Palin campaign accuses ACORN, a community activist group that operates nationwide, of perpetrating "massive voter fraud." It says Obama has “long and deep” ties to the group. We find both claims to be exaggerated. But we also find Obama has understated the extent of his work with the group. Full Story »

This is an exhaustive investigation of ACORN. I thought I knew quite a bit, but I picked up new info here. Extensively linked and documented, with 21 sources listed. In some places viewpoints from sources like "Republican officials" are left anonymous and unlinked in the text. Also I am surprised that FactCheck did not look into the legal issues surrounding false voter registrations.

In a closely divided America, the war is won based on who gets to vote. It is amazing that the right to vote is not guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, and even in states that do guarantee the right to vote, it is too easy to form roadblocks. Most other democracies must wonder what the fuss is all about, since automatic voter registration for all citizens leaves little doubt as to who can vote.

This is a very thorough and objective assessment of McCain's accusations concerning ACORN and Obama's relationship with that organization and Obama's response. The facts are here. It's really up to the reader to assess the relative degree of exaggeration on each side.

this seems somewhat more complicated than factcheck usually gets --at least partly because there's a lot of information to check. i wish for a more concise summary here before or after the information which could be used in other's stories to clear up the questions it seems as if it bent over backwards for fairness but some statements made for political purposes were not immediately checkable.

from my biased perspective, it seems that there isn't an emphasis on the difference in degree of exaggeration by each party.

What I find interesting about the ACORN stealing democracy claims, is that the people making those claims were quiet and did not advocate recounts in Florida (or anywhere else) in 2000 when democracy may have indeed been stolen.
