Top Ex-Diplomats Slam 'Militarisation' of Foreign Policy

While the Pentagon's budget has risen to heights not seen since World War II, U.S. diplomatic and foreign aid assets have largely atrophied and must be quickly rebuilt by any new administration that takes office in January, according to a new report released here this week by former senior foreign service officers.

The report by the American Academy of Diplomacy (AAD) and the Henry L. Stimson Centre is calling for a nearly 50 percent increase in ... Full Story »

Relies a bit heavily on quotes from the report. Sourcing could have been much better. Informative, but somewhat dry.

This story is not to be missed by those following the disastrous course of US foreign policy under the Bush administration. The great ascendancy of the military in the projection of American influence abroad is undermining the security of the US and in fact subverting the Republic, in my opinion. The neocon agenda is military control of the Middle East by the US, to "protect" Israel, even at an astronomic cost and despite too-clear evidence the strategy is counter-productive.

I agree with the author, Jim Lobe, that the US needs to build up its diplomatic strength and rein in the military. I also agree that the neocon agenda is a threat to US national security.
