EU to rubber-stamp common immigration and asylum rules

At this week's top-level summit in Brussels (15-16 October), EU leaders are expected to formally back the European Pact on Immigration and Asylum, a set of political commitments in five areas - regular and irregular immigration, border controls, asylum policies and co-operation with countries of origin and of transit.

It's a brief report on the predicted outcome of a meeting to discuss EU immigration policy, but perhaps the subtext is the reference the European Council on Refugees and Exiles, where greater coverage of this new item can be found.

It would be a surprise if the EU member states were to do anything other than to vote for that which is politically expedient. The link provides more background information.
