Being an Arab is no slur

Posted by Derek HawkinsThe writer dresses John McCain down for his stupid response to the woman who claimed Obama was an "Arab"; McCain said he was a "decent family man." This is the same McCain who sang "Bomb bomb Iran" as what would be his policy toward Iran after Iraq. Asked if this was not being insensitive, McCain replied: "Insenstive to what? The Iranians?"
This statement of McCain's deserves more media coverage for what it indicates about him and what a McCain administration might mean for nonChristians. Combine this statement with the pastor delivering an invocation last week for McCain indicating that enemies of Christianity were praying for Obama paints a picture of religious intolerance and bigotry.
The author picks up a point ignored by most of the press. When the fearful woman said "he's an Arab," McCain failed to say that (1) the world if full of people who are of Arab descent who are equally wonderful and ethical with people of any ethnicity, and (2) that the statement that Obama is an Arab was false in addition to the racism of the framing. The point is important and made well.
