This is an interesting, multi-faceted perspective on nascent racism in a tolerant Catholic culture, as immigration increases, and resentments build. Statistics, victims, clergy and politicians are quoted and incidents related as the political landscape that ferments the trouble is described. The brief article could present more detailed perspectives from legal and political viewpoints.

"You can’t say all Italians are racist, but it would also be dangerous to underestimate what’s happening,”

This is a society under stress to re-evaluate its image from benign to something more sinister as acts of
violence erupt against immigrants and politicians play upon fears of citizens about jobs and crime. A familiar refrain in the US, also.
