Health Care and the 'Predator State'

In June 2008, I used this space to call on then-Sen. Barack Obama to add economist James K. Galbraith's book, "The Predator State," to his reading list. As an account of the capture of government by private interests, I thought it would make a far more useful guide to contemporary political economy than the market-glorifying texts that were still in fashion in those days. Insightful observations about the government's role in health care, from the Wall Street Journal's liberal commentator. The author points out that many Republicans now use of the words 'predator state' to oppose government intervention in health care, but that this expression comes from a book by economist James K. Galbraith, which has the opposite meaning. In the process, he reveals some of the different perspectives which divide the left from the right, which helps us better understand the basis of this conflict - and hopefully find ways to resolve it peacefully.
