This opinion piece has journalistic merit. The author provides a reasoned analysis, rather than expressing prejudices on the subject. He makes clear distinctions and corrects those who make wild charges that are not substantive.

This is largely a rehash of discredited stories about Obama, directly in line with the current talking points from the McCain campaign. Obama's association with William Ayers, for example, is clearly no more than the casual association of people moving in the same political circles, yet Sowell tries to paint it as an "alliance" and tarnish Obama through, yes, "guilt by association". Calling something an "alliance" with no evidence doesn't make it one.
