As just a transcript of an interview, this over-promises. It wants to be an attack on the higher education system in this country and comes off as an argument for watering it down with a pure liberal arts approach and encouraging students to take a year off.

Ms. Gritz asks questions of the interviewee that really bring out the crux of their book. Readers can read this interview and get a good idea of the topics and viewpoints discussed in the book.

I went to a college such as the ones Hacker and Dreifus admire. Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL, is a small, liberal arts school where I got the opportunity to really bond with and learn lessons about life and knowledge from my professors. The professors care about the students and teaching, not just about research, which they are not pressured to do. I felt like a student, not a number. I have the highest regard for these types of institutions where real, well-rounded learning takes place.
