Our view: The need to ensure the availability of affordable health care insurance is too great to declare the public option dead on arrival, despite the Senate's misgivings

As discouraging as it was to watch certain members of the Senate Finance Committee treat the concept of affordable health insurance coverage as America's own Bolshevik Revolution last week, hope for a modicum of common sense in the U.S. Congress springs eternal. The best thing about this piece is the point that Social Security and Medicare (aka "public option") are hardly considered controversial, especially by the tens of millions of people who depend on it. The silliest part is the argument in favor of a "trigger" so the government option won't be implemented until the insurance companies misbehave. Huh? How long are we supposed to wait?

Well written, simple, factual and objective, though fairly narrow in scope. Probably as much information as the average American is capable of handling these days without screaming or holding up some inane sign protesting some unconnected irrelevancy.
