Mark Lynas: the green heretic persecuted for his nuclear conversion

Best of all, these new reactors - prototypes of which have already been tested - can produce power by burning up existing stocks of nuclear waste. As Blees puts it: "Thus we have a prodigious supply of free fuel that is actually even better than free, for it is material that we are quite desperate to get rid of." Who could object to that? This article, because it represents an advocate's shift from green to pro nuclear in a similar way Greenpeace's former co-founder Patrick Moore did, sparked my interest. However on close reading it offered little in regard to any underlying proof of fast breeder reactors safety, only his conversion to it. The reference to Tom Blees book, Prescription For The Planet was not synopsized or further explained.

However, everything that he has stated regarding nuclear power is 100% factual, and it's just the tip of the iceberg in the fact that nuclear energy is the world's only choice if we want to continue using power at the rates we do, and it's a surprisingly good choice when you actually dig into the facts. For an example of a reactor he spoke of, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integral_fast_reactor Note that research for this reactor was shot down over proliferation concerns, which is one the reactor's incredible strengths over current technology. Fearmongering enables the oil and coal industry to maintain a stronghold on our energy when it ... More »
