Last week saw the demise of the shadow banking system that has been created over the past 20 years. Because of a greater regulation of banks, most financial intermediation in the past two decades has grown within this shadow system whose members are broker-dealers, hedge funds, private equity groups, structured investment vehicles and conduits, money market funds and non-bank mortgage lenders. Contains some jargon not intended for the average reader that made it difficult to get through. Altogether factual and well reasoned, though.

Because of the writer's credentials and evident grasp of the situation, this short article is not only convincing, but very scary. The linked article from Politico provides a somewhat broader look, but puts hedge funds at the center of the next wave as well.
