The State of Sarah Palin

The peculiar political landscape of the Vice-Presidential hopeful.

Many Alaskans enjoy being disconnected from the Lower Forty-eight, which is sometimes referred to as if it were a foreign country. There is pride in this sense of apartness, and that pride has been stung repeatedly since 2006, when the F.B.I. began raiding state lawmakers' offices in an ever-expanding anti-corruption campaign. There have been indictments and guilty pleas. Oil-industry executives who were caught on videotape in the Baranof Hotel, in Juneau, ... Full Story »

Thoughtful, in-depth report from the New Yorker, which offers a nuanced perspective on Sarah Palin and how she is perceived in Alaska. The author provides a closer perspective on Palin, based on an interview conducted earlier this summer. An eye-opener, based on copious factual evidence, as well as helpful context and insights.

Almost a primer on politics in Alaska with an emphasis on Palin. I thought this was aptly descriptive:"As a public speaker, Palin was known for expressing goals and voicing good intentions with gusto, if with few specifics. As she talked about her hopes for Alaska, she often seemed to skip from slogan to slogan without ever touching solid ground."

This is a comprehensive and well researched story on Palin and Alaskan politics based on interviews and research conducted in Alaska. The story is long but well written and intriguing in the discussions regarding the perspective of politics before Palin became the VP candidate and covers Senator Stevens (“I do not lose my temper, I always know where it is.”), the gas pipeline, and Palin’s record as mayor and governor. Gourevitch has been covering Alaska since Stevens was indicted and has gained valuable insight into how Alaskan’s view themselves and the shift it would take for Palin to place country first over Alaska. Excellent article that is worth reading.

The usual excellent New Yorker story about Palin and Alaska. However, McCain is the one media should really be concentrating on--after all, he IS the Republican candidate for president. While story after story appears about Palin, the media ignore the Democratic VP nominee, old what's-his-name. Looks like Rove's diversion is working.

Excellent piece. Truly widens my perspective of the attitudes of Alaskans. It doesn't tar and feather Palin but neither does it sugar coat her. Very well documented. My only complaint would be length but, to be honest, I'm not sure what I would have cut.

Guess what. The New Yorker doesn't like Sarah Palin. She is subjected to a level of examination and criticism to which Obama would never experience in the New Yorker. The story exhibits political bias.

This special report has journalistic merit. It provides considerable factual information and quotes a number of sources, favorable and unfavorable. It does point out Gov Palin's many accomplishments, and is better in this respect than most of the major media.

By picking Sarah Palin, John McCain gas demonstrated that he's willing to gamble with this country's future, without any serious considerations for the risk. I for one don't want to put my life and my family's life into John McCain's hands.
