Capito Taken Aback by McCain Position on Mountaintop Removal

"I was surprised. Quite honestly, it caught me off guard."

That's what Second District Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, a Republican, has to say about Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain's comments on mountaintop removal mining earlier this week in Orlando, Florida. This has barely any context, but the information point is interesting. The incongruous comments from McCain leave me wishing this was explored further.

This short piece concisely and accurately reports the shock and dismay of Republican Congresswoman Capito of West Virginia in response to McCain's new position that mountaintop mining (specifically, removal of coal) should be eliminated. The congresswoman said his comments make her wonder just how committed McCain is to utilizing coal in achieving energy independence and claims his remark will surely hurt him politically in West Virginia.
