September 11 2001 and a world that changed
A year or so ago the verdict on our performance would have been harsh: two bad wars, with a third one brewing, abrogations of the law and civil liberties that were as deplorable as they were ineffective, alienated minorities in many countries, and a relationship between the west and the Muslim world marked by misunderstanding and hostility.
