Sarah Palin Assemblies of God

The church where Sarah Palin grew up and was baptized preaches some of the most extreme religious views in the nation.

The McCain campaign has downplayed Palin's Pentecostal roots. But as her testimony at the Wasilla Assembly of God demonstrates, she is motivated by the idea that godly forces are locked in spiritual warfare with satanic forces. For many with a Pentecostal upbringing like Palin's, fighting that battle is part of God's plan for the end of days, when war will end the world as we know it, Jesus will come back, and non-Christians will convert or perish. Back when the population was suspicious even of Catholics, Kennedy separated his religious beliefs from his duties as president. Now with a "nut case" religion that has strong views on end days and Israel and religious warfare, the question is more relevant than in the days of JFK. If you do not tour religious circles much, this story give you some background on the AOG world.

This informative and thoughtful article is a great first step toward understanding Sarah Palin's religious views and the theology that fundamentally shapes her understanding of the vital issues we face at home and abroad. This opinion piece has minimal journalistic merit. The author is biased against Pentacostal Christians, and provides no balance to the anti-Palin rhetoric. There is no indication that the author even knows that Palin's former church is much more mainstream than Obama's former church, which he only left reluctantly. The author should have read up on the religious denominations before writing the piece.
