New heights of stupidity

We're fighting multiple wars; our oldest and most established financial institutions are on the verge of collapse; we've fundamentally transformed and then dismantled our constitutional framework over the last eight years, etc. etc. But the Right and their media partners are striving to ensure that our election this year is going to be dominated and determined by whether John Kerry looks stupid in wind-surfing tights Barack Obama called Sarah Palin a "pig" ... A great opinion piece explaining the depths to which our politicians and media have sunk. The author complains of the latest distortion of the words of a candidate and how the MSM can't seem to cover items of real importance. Read the article and check out the comic he references, pretty funny.

This excellent thrashing of the mainstream media for their complicity in carrying forward the inane campaign strategies of the McCain/Palin camp, should not be missed. That the American voters are so profoundly stupid as to lap the McCain camp crap up, is disheartening but not surprising.

Glenn Greenwald is one of the best bloggers/journalists around, with a broad perspective and a thorough knowledge of the facts before he begins writing. He almost always gets it right...and he does again this time.

I especially love the clip of McCain using the same expression about Clinton's healthcare plan. I would argue that he was referring to the plan, not Senator Clinton. Having read Obama's comment, it was the same thing. He didn't even mention Palin. This is stupid and the McCain campaign and media are having a field day with it. Greenwald is, as he so often is, exactly right. I also love all the updates. Great stuff!

As an analysis of a controversial statement, this article takes a highly partisan approach, deftly illustrating the inaccurate and misleading reactions to the statement, while ignoring the very real interpretation that could lead to said responses. As such we are not given a balanced view, and Senator Obama is not taken to task as he well should.

This opinion piece has modest journalistic merit. It is extremely biased. The author does not accept that Obama obviously made the comments out of sheer frustration at how poorly his campaign is going, from the VP selection fiasco to the decision not to accept public money to the failure to develop any campaign message other than "change". Obama knew his remarks would be widely reported since they were clearly aimed at his opponents. The controversy was not manufactured by right-wing media, since Reuters and AP and MSNBC, all on the left, were the first to report it.

By using these low and nasty tactics, John McCain has demonstrated once again that the only thing he has put first is himself. This nation faces many tough issues and challenges, and instead of providing solutions, John McCain chooses to distract us with dirty politics. I hope the media will do the responsible thing and set the record straight. I for one am tired of this kind of politics. We deserve better.
