An e-mail to friends from Wasilla becomes Internet hit

In all the coverage of Palin, Kilkenny's e-mail offers something maybe unique: a critique from someone who has known Palin since 1992 and been observing her up close for many years, long before Palin became widely known even among Alaskans. Full Story »

This isn't a particularly important story, but it's an interesting read.

This seems to indicate that many people, like me, are searching for real information about Palin and are not finding it in the mainstream press. This email gave me better insight into Palin than anything else I have read even when I discounted any personal motivation for writing it. It also gives the press a good starting point for looking into Palin’s record. I’m not sure they will do their job but hope does spring eternal, doesn’t it?

The "More on this story" box has a link to the subject e-mail. Viewpoints from the e-mail author and one journalist might have been supplemented with partisan viewpoints and the Snopes research. Evidence is very complete.

Interesting profile of Anne Kilkenny, who knows Sarah Palin incredibly well, and how an email Anne sent originally to friends got passed along to others and went viral across the Web; because this email contained personal, original insights into Sarah Palin's character, its massive re-posting has made her a pseudo celebrity. Solid reporting on who Kilkenny is, her background and connection to Palin, which is incredibly important in framing this email. The reporter keeps his/her distance from the original email a bit, and objectively critiques what is and isn't verifiable within it, offering additional context.

This is an interesting story about what happens when the media decide not to look at Sarah Palin. It appears this is one of several similar Alaskans attempt to inform their friends. If the media is bashful, there are others that are not and are willing to let others know.

The story about Kilkenny is a good presentation of how popular the letter has become. You must select the link to read the letter itself, which is recommended. My friend from Wasilla did not venture nearly as much information, as though she was hesitant to say much negative and preferred faint praise. I have been there a few times and the town is an interesting mix of hermits, rednecks, ordinary people, and wonderful people in touch with and in love with nature. Nothing there looked like the White House.

I read the Kilkenny letter about a week ago on a listserv. At the time, I wondered many of the same things: Is this from a real person? Are the things she says true? As a News Trust member, and with some of my own online research, I was able to verify much of what the letter said. Now I have an answer to the first question too. One other point was also true, Palin was unknown outside Alaska. And, unlike the New York Times, few people read the Anchorage press. So people were hungry for real information.

One wonders how carefully McCain vetted Sara Palin, then it occurs that he got just what he wanted. Anne Kilkenny gains no advantage from writing this and may even suffer from it. Her words ring true and Palin's ring false. The matters can be verified and some have been in other places.

This opinion piece has nojournalistic value. It is totally lacking in the balance that genuine journalism requires. Se http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/sliming_palin.html for an analysis by a neutral source of the lies in this piece. A shame that it was presented at NewsTrust.
