Vetting

Having been through the process of "vetting" prospective cabinet members, I can tell you it's time-consuming, detailed, and thorough. I'd like to think the vetting of a vice presidential nominee would be more so - especially one whose odds of becoming president, should she be elected, are somewhat higher than that of the normal vice president. The problem with this story is that I don't know if it's accurate. Neither does Reich. He can point to a lot of detail about how vetting was done when he was in D.C. But he can't tell us how it was done this time. And those who do aren't talking. Whether governor Palin is ready to take over as President is a valid topic, and one he touches on briefly. But the rest is a waste of time because McCain is unlikely to admit he either picked her to solidify the Christian right and didn't really care about any other qualifications or problems, or that he did it impulsively for the sheer PR value. What matters is, would we want her as president?

This opinion piece has minimal journalistic merit. The author promotes the Democrat's point of view, but ignores Obama's bungled VP search process, which led to picking an old senator with no experience at the very last minute (Friday night, too late for the news shows) instead of selecting from several far more qualified governors, such as Bredesen and Sebelius. The lack of coverage of that side makes this piece have little value.
