Palin Slashed Funding for Teen Moms

ST. PAUL -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee who revealed Monday that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, earlier this year used her line-item veto to slash funding for a state program benefiting teen mothers in need of a place to live. Full Story »

This story is so bad that the executive director of the organization in question issued a press release addressing it <http: covenanthouseak.org="" press_release_9_4_08.pdf="">. Apparently the author couldn't be bothered to seek comment from the most obvious source. This story has damaged my trust in the Washington Post.

Story points out Palin’s reduction in the budget for a state program benefiting teen mothers in need of a place to live and her belief in abstinence only education. Many families are not supportive of their pregnant teens for a situation that could have easily been avoided with education. To survive in today’s economy, both parents work in many families and teenagers are not provided with the supervision and education they need. The story only focuses on the one item in the budget and does not provide information on trends for funding, number of teens that use the program and if there is an increase in teen pregnancies as abstinence only education increases.

This story cites yet another example of how McCain's choice for VP, Sarah Palin'e short record in office is filled with contradictions. She is for abstinence, for banning birth control education in schools, but claims to support young, unmarried girls who decide to go through with accidental pregnancies. Then she cuts the state programs that would allow these young mothers to raise their children properly.

The article reports on Paylin slashing funds for social services that had been approved by the legislature. While she advocates for a "just say yes, yes, yes (or is a just say no?)" sex education policy, she cuts the funds for the victims of that policy against science based sex education. The investigative reporting gives a vivid idea of what would be in store for the country should McCain encounter his next plane crash.

I saw this yesterday and thought the same thing as the other reviewers. First, it's hard to deny the accuracy of a bill with Palin's initials on it--especially with a copy of it reproduced. You'll notice the other cut is even more drastic--to a food bank. It's nice when you can support your daughter in her time of need. But not all girls have a family that can or will do that. Not every family has two employed parents that earn such high salaries as the Palins. Some people are hungry and desperate. But people like Palin don't believe the state has any role in supporting them. They should all have loving families and churches who will do so. If they don't, that's just their tough luck. This, my friends, is what Christian ... More »
